December 3rd is the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day promotes the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all areas of society. At Interpreters and Translators, Inc. (iTi), we believe that language services for the disabled are very important. They help create accessibility and inclusion.

Why Language Services Matter

Language access plays a vital role in ensuring that individuals with disabilities can fully participate in society. From American Sign Language (ASL) to Braille Transcription, these services help people communicate better. They create equal opportunities for education, jobs, and social interaction for those who need language assistance.

Key Language Services for the Disabled

  • American Sign Language (ASL): ASL is a complete, natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf communities in the United States and most of Anglophone Canada.
  • CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is a transcription service that turns spoken words into text. This text appears on a screen for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, like real-time subtitles.
  • C-Print: C-Print is another speech-to-text service that provides a real-time transcription of spoken language. While CART is word-for-word, C-Print is a summary of the speech. More like note-taking, C-Print is often used in educational settings.
  • Braille Translation Services: These services change printed text into Braille. This makes written information accessible for people who are blind or visually impaired.

The Role of ASL Interpreter Services

ASL interpreter services are essential for effective communication between Deaf and hearing individuals. In a medical setting, courtroom, or classroom, ASL interpreting services help Deaf individuals access information. This allows them to fully engage in their communities.

  • ASL interpretation services. Our qualified sign language interpreters are available for assignments in various settings, including healthcare, legal, and educational environments.
  • CART and C-Print services. These are recognized accommodations to support individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Braille translation services. Braille makes written materials, including signage, accessible to those who are blind or visually impaired.
