The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) has a rigorous set of criteria for certification, including:
- A bachelor's degree or successful application of equivalency through Alternative Pathway.
- A high level of proficiency in both ASL and English
- Completion of a dedicated interpreter education program.
- A qualifying score on the National Interpreter. Certification (NIC) exam
- Continuing education through RID's Certification Maintenance Program.
